Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting
March 16, 2004
Members Present:
Nelle Bedner, Tammy Benson, Joe Cangelosi, Nealon DeVore, Richard Gaughan, Charles Harvey, David Harvey, Wes Hennings, Joe Horton, Dawn Jakubowski, Jennifer Johnson, Rahul Mehta, Elizabeth Smith, Misty Williams, and Valerie Williams.
Members Absent:
John Choinski, Mary Harlan, Tony Sitz, Ann Witcher, and Curtis Wilder,
The items of the agenda included:
1. Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.
2. Minutes of the February 17, 2004 meeting were approved as circulated.
3. Report of Subcommittee I – Joe Cangelosi, Chair
Dr. Cangelosi moved to approve, with minor editorial changes, the following new course proposals for the Department of Computer Science: CSCI 3345 – Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction; CSCI 4191 – Seminar in Applied Computing; CSCI 4310 – Introduction to Scientific Computing; and CSCI 4355 – Distributed Object Computing. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed 11 yes, 3 no, 0 abstentions.
Dr. Cangelosi moved to approve a level change for CSCI 2375 – Internship In Computer Science to CSCI 3375 and level change for CSCI 4370 – Database I to CSCI 3360 and move from an elective to a required course. Dr. Bedner seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Cangelosi moved to approve a new course BIOL 4320 – Neurodevelopment and Pathology. Dr. Benson seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Cangelosi moved to approve a new course MSIT 4321 – Integrated Curriculum, Planning, & Assessment: Secondary, with minor editorial changes. Ms. Williams seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed 13 yes, 1 no, 0 abstentions.
Dr. Cangelosi moved to approve changes in the chemistry minor to include: CHEM 2401 – Organic Chemistry I from an elective to a requirement; CHEM 3520 – Quantitative Analysis from a requirement to an elective; require either CHEM 3411 – Organic Chemistry II or CHEM 3520 – Quantitative Analysis, changes in the non-ACS certified chemistry major to include: CHEM 3360 – Intermediate Organic Chemistry from an elective to a requirement; CHEM 4290 – Chemical Literature from a requirement to an elective and required CHEM 3300 or 4320; remove restriction that 3300 and 3360 not count toward the major, and prerequisite change for CHEM 3300 – Principles of Biochemistry from CHEM 2450 or CHEM 3411 to only CHEM 3411. Dr. Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Dr. Stanitski was invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed 13 yes, 1 no, 0 abstentions.
4. Report of Subcommittee II – Dr. Rahul Mehta, Chair.
Dr. Mehta moved to approve a new Bachelor of Applied Sciences (B.A.S.) degree program. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Dr. Emogene Fox was invited in to answer council questions. Discussion continued. Motion passed 12 yes, 2 no, 0 abstentions.
Dr. Mehta moved to approve WRTG 3320 – Digital Filmmaking Emphasis from an elective to a requirement; WRTG 3330 – Creative Writing Workshop (Screenwriting) from a requirement to an elective; two new courses in the Department of Geography: GEOG 3307 – GIS in Practice: Business and Social Science Applications and GEOG 3309 – GIS in Practice: Environmental Applications; four new courses in the Department of Philosophy and Religion: PHIL 4340 – The Meaning of Life; RELG 3320 – Modern Religious Thought; RELG 3330 – Religion and Gender; and RELG 3340 – Religion, Science, and Technology; and a course number changes for WLAN 4680 to 4681 and WLAN 4690 to 4691. Dr. Horton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
5. Report of Subcommittee III – Dr. Nelle Bedner, Chair
Dr. Bedner moved to approve a new course MIS 43XX – Special Topics in Visual Basic. Dr. Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Bedner moved to approve changes in the GIS/Spatial Systems Track of the MIS Major to reflect that GEOG 3307 – GIS in Practice becomes a required course along with GEOG 3311 and GEOG 4330, and to keep the total number of hours the same, recommend that only three hours of major electives be required and that GEOG 2375 be dropped from the list of major electives; changes to the MIS minor to reflect MIS 4362 or CSCI 1480 be added to list of requirements; change the following courses from requirements to electives under the Insurance & Risk Management Major – QMTH 3325, FINA 3350, INSU 3330, and INSU 4310; and a new course INSU 4330 – Insurance Operations and Regulation with the expectation that the evaluative methods will be elaborated. Dr. Charles Harvey seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
6. Dean Roden reminded the council members that beginning Fall 2004, everyone should plan on extra time following X-Period to complete all council business.
