Minutes Undergraduate Council Meeting
November 16 2004
Members Present:
Joe Anderson, George Bratton, Chris Walter (for Michelle Bridges), Lynn Burley, Mary Harlan, Charles Harvey, Joe Horton, Jennifer Johnson, Bill Kordsmeier, Mike Scoles, Elizabeth Smith, Conrad Stanitski, Ann Witcher, Jeff Whittingham, Valerie Williams, and Steve Zeltmann.
Members Absent:
Lorien Foote, Richard Gaughan, Kevin Kendrick, and Tony Sitz
The items of the agenda included:
1. Meeting was called to order by Dr. Sally A. Roden, Chair.
2. Minutes of the October 19, 2004 meeting were approved as circulated.
3. Report of Subcommittee I – Charles Harvey, Interim Chair.
Dr. Harvey moved to recommend approval of a new course CHEM 3350- Metabolic Biochemistry. Dr. Bratton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
4. Report of Subcommittee II – Joe Horton, Chair
Dr. Horton moved to remove from the table ENGL 4381 – Major African/African American Writers and ENGL 4382 – Race in American Literature. Dr. Stanitski seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of new courses ENGL 4381 – Major African/African American Writers and ENGL 4382 – Race in American Literature. Dr. Burley seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of new courses ART 3307 – Arts of Africa and ART 3311 – Ancient South American Art. Ms. Smith seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of new courses MATH 2125/2225/2325 – Independent Study in Mathematics, MATH 3125/3225/3325 – Special Topics in Mathematics, and MATH 4125/4225/4325 – Undergraduate Research in Mathematics. Dr. Bratton seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Dr. Horton moved to recommend approval of a revision in the Mathematics: BS Special Degree Requirements:
In addition to other requirements for graduation and the general education requirements in mathematics and science, the Bachelor of Science degree
requires completion of one year of mathematics (excluding UNIV 1340, MATH 3351, and MATH 4310) or two courses in a laboratory science (e.g. 2 courses in biology, 2 courses in chemistry, etc.) General Education science courses (e.g., BIOL 1400, CHEM 1400, and PHYS 1400) cannot be used to satisfy the additional year of science.
Dr. Zeltmann seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed 13 yes, 0 no, 2 abstentions.
5. Report of Subcommittee III – Elizabeth Smith, Chair
Ms. Smith moved to recommend approval of new courses RELG 3320 – Buddhism; RELG 3330 – Judaism; RELG 3340 – African American Religious Thought; RELG 4330 – Readings in Religious Studies; RELG 4320 – Contemporary Religious Thought; RELG 4300 – Religious Studies for Honors Tutorial; and a course number change for RELG 2301 – Theories and Methods in Religious Studies to RELG 3301. Dr. Anderson seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously.
Ms. Smith moved to recommend approval of a revision of the Religious Studies Major and Minor Program Curricula to include RELG 3320; RELG 3330; RELG 3340; RELG 4330; RELG 4320; and RELG 4300 as electives. Dr. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

2. GEOG 3309 – GIS in Practice: Environmental Applications
3. Clarification of wording regarding departmental honors requirements
