Minutes

September 19, 2000

The Undergraduate Council met at 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2000, in the Torreyson Library Conference Room. The following members were present: C. Acre, A. L. Barile, T. Benson, K. Craig, D. Harvey, R. Holden, D. Howell-Creswell, D. Kim, L. Koenigseder, J. Mainord, I Saltz, C. Stanitski, W. Stengel, and B. Williams.

The items of the agenda included:

I.    Minutes of April 28, 2000, approved as circulated.

II.    Review of charge of the Undergraduate Council.

III.    Announcement of new Council Members: Tammy Benson, Joe Cangelosi, Karen Craig, David Harvey, Dawn Jakubowski, & Conrad Stanitski.

IV.    Subcommittee Membership Assignments:

Subcommittee I: Debbie Howell-Creswell, Chair; Ami Barile; Joe Cangelosi; Karen Craig; Wayne Stengel.
Subcommittee II: Becky Williams, Chair; Ira Saltz, Catherine Acre; Tammy Benson; Dawn Jakubowski.
Subcommittee III: David Kim, Chair; David Harvey; Rob Holden; Jim Mainord; Conrad Stanitski.

V.    Discussion of Council procedural rules with consensus agreement that:

Council voting will be by show of hands.
Secret ballot voting will be at the request of a Council member.
Council membership takes precedence over Department/College role; all Council members have voting privileges on all proposals before the Council.

VI.    Report of Subcommittee I: Debbie Howell-Creswell, Chair.

Minutes of Subcommittee I distributed and reviewed (Attachment A.)

Recommendation: Approval of the new course proposals WRTG 4315 and WRTG 4325 (with the addition of WRTG 1320 as a prerequisite.) (M/S Passed, unanimous; Howell-Creswell/Holden)

Discussion: Both proposals required editorial changes that were made. The subcommittee sought clarification re: prerequisites. Discussion by the Council re: freshman level prerequisite for 4000 level course. Confirmation by Dr. Howell-Creswell that Sociology Department contacted.

Recommendation: Approval of the modifications to the Information Systems minor. (M/S Passed with 1 abstention; Howell-Creswell/Barile.)

VII.    Report of Subcommittee III: David Kim, Chair

Minutes of Subcommittee III distributed and reviewed (Attachment B.)

Revised curriculum for the BS in Health Sciences, Gerontology Emphasis.

Curriculum proposal for a minor in gerontology.

New undergraduate senior level course entitled "Directed Independent Study."

New 4000/5000 gerontology course entitled "Health Concerns of Aging."

New 4000/5000 course entitled "Field Experience in Health Education."

(M/S Passed: unanimous; Kim/Holden.)

Discussion: Distinction between Geriatrics and Gerontology noted. Revised curriculum represents credit hour increase from 125 to 126 credits.

VIII.    Information Items:

 Art Department

Editorial change for BA Degree (Art Education)

Deletion of Pre-Architecture and Pre-Landscape programs

Military Science - Course description changes

MILS 1101 - Leadership I
MILS 1110 - Leadership II
MILS 2204 - Military Organization/Tactics I
MILS 2213 - Military Organization/Tactics II
MILS 3305 - Advanced Leadership and Tactics I

IX.    Suggestions/Comments: Subcommittee requested to forward minutes to Council Secretary prior to scheduled Council meetings.
