High Table
Doug Corbitt of the UAMS Division of Medical Humanities will present "Pickle of Panacea? Ethical Issues in Human Stem Cell Research" at the Honors College Forum in Room 302, McAlister Hall at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19.
Human stem cell research offers an unparalleled opportunity for investigating cellular specialization during embryological development. Since some of our most serious medical conditions, i.e., cancer and birth defects, are due to abnormal cell specialization and division, a better understanding of the normal processes may help us identify the fundamental errors that cause these often deadly illnesses and may, in turn, lead to treatments and/or cures. The research, however, raises a host of ethical concerns and policy considerations-especially concerning the sources of stem cells.
