The digital age has necessitated the creation of a mechanism designed specifically to update existing copyright law based upon the technological advances of recent years. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was signed into law during October 1998. The DMCA is designed to update existing copyright law for the digital age. The DMCA provides some protection from copyright infringement for on-line providers when an individual is designated as the agent who will receive notifications of claimed infringement.
