Overview
The
dean of students is the chief disciplinary officer of the
university. He is responsible for coordinating and enforcing the
university student conduct code, and upholding student rights and
responsibilities. The dean of students is also responsible for the
following:
-
Overseeing
the departments of Greek Services & Leadership Development
and Recreation & Intramural Sports;
-
Coordinating
the UCA Student Handbook & Daily
Planner;
-
Administering
the Emergency Student Loan Fund;
-
Chairing
the UCA Student Development Committee; and
-
Advising
the UCA Circle K Club (a student
community service organization).
Student
Conduct
The
primary goals of the student conduct system at UCA are to change
or redirect student behavior, protect the university environment,
and protect the rights of students involved in the disciplinary
process. The standards of student conduct - including discipline
procedures, policies, and sanctions - can be found in the UCA
Student Handbook & Daily Planner.
Alcohol
& Drug Information
UCA takes
an active role to minimize alcohol and drug use at the university.
Recent studies have found that UCA students use and abuse alcohol
at a much lower rate than students at other institutions in the
country. Steps we take to minimize alcohol and drug use include:
-
UCA
bans the possession or use of alcohol and drugs on campus.
Students who use alcohol or drugs will, at a minimum, be
placed on probation and be required to attend an alcohol and
drug education program. Students are also subject to criminal
arrest.
-
Parents
of entering freshmen (under the age of 21) will be notified in
writing if their son or daughter violates the university
alcohol or drug policy.
-
Students
who use hard drugs or possess large quantities of marijuana
(with intent to deliver) are subject to removal from the
university.
-
University
police actively patrols the campus and streets near the
campus. Students who drink and drive are subject to arrest for
"drinking while intoxicated."
-
Alcohol
is not permitted at social events scheduled at fraternity or
sorority Greek houses. Social events held at other off-campus
locations must be registered with the dean of students, and
must follow local, state, and national organization
guidelines.
Campus
Safety
UCA enjoys
a positive reputation as being a safe campus. According to
national statistics, UCA rates in the top 10 percent of colleges
and universities in the country with the lowest crime rate on
campus. University policies and practices that contribute to
campus safety include:
-
UCA
prohibits firearms on campus. Students found in possession of
a firearm are subject to a three (3) year suspension from the
university.
-
The
possession or use of alcohol or drugs on campus is strictly
prohibited, as noted earlier.
-
The
university has 23 sworn police officers, many who patrol the
campus on bike teams for high visibility. University police
has also established an "adopt a hall" program to
provide visibility and support to students living in the
residence halls.
-
Individuals
not associated with the university who come onto campus and
violate university policies are normally banned from the
campus, after a hearing is conducted.
-
Students
involved in serious behaviors such as felony theft, hard drugs
or selling of drugs, severe battery or causing serious injury,
etc., are subject to removal from the university.
UCA
Student Handbook & Daily Planner
The UCA
Student Handbook & Daily Planner is printed each year by
the Dean of Students Office. The handbook contains important
information about university policies, programs, and services. It
also contains a "calendar of events" and "daily
planner" for students’ use. Handbooks
are made available at fee payment and registration, residence
halls, student center information desk, and 108 Bernard Hall.
Handbook information is also available on the UCA web page at http://www.uca.edu/studentservice/handbook/
Emergency
Student Loan Fund
The
division of student services provides a small emergency student
loan to students who are in need of financial assistance (for
books, utilities, food, car repair, and other needs). The maximum
loan amount is $150. There is no interest charged on the loan, and
payment plans are flexible. We normally ask students to pay back
the loan within the semester it is received, so loan money can be
given to other students. Loans are dispersed as long as money
exists in the emergency loan account. Funds for the emergency
student loan come from individual donations and fund-raisers.
Students in need of a small loan may contact 108 Bernard Hall for
information and application.
Individuals
who wish to give to the emergency student loan fund may send a
check, made payable to the UCA Foundation, to: Gary Roberts, Dean
of Students, UCA Box 4937, Conway, AR 72035. Please indicate
"for emergency student loan fund" on the check. All
contributions are tax deductible.
