Disability Support: Academic Accommodations

ACADEMIC ACCOMMODATIONS AND COUNSELING

While students are encouraged to meet with their appropriate academic advisors, DSS can assist in the academic counseling process to suggest appropriate classroom accommodations. When the student's disability impacts scheduling and other academic areas, priority registration can be given under certain circumstances. Classroom accommodations are determined on an individual basis. Additional accommodations that are available based on student need include:

	note takers
	readers and/or scribes
	sign language and oral interpreters

Reasonable accommodations depend upon the nature and degree of severity of the documented disability. While the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1991 requires that priority consideration be given to the specific methods requested by the student, it does not imply that a particular accommodation must be granted if it is deemed not reasonable and other suitable techniques are available. Students should contact DSS as soon as possible regarding their needs.
