It is the student’s responsibility to hand deliver his/her
accommodation letter to each instructor. Student’s should make
an appointment to see each instructor during available office hours.
Students should not meet with his/her instructor in the classroom before
or after class. There are many distractions at these time and
instructors may not be able to give their undivided attention.
When
talking to instructors, do:
 |
Be on time for the appointment |
 |
Be calm and courteous, and do not
interrupt |
 |
Discuss the accommodations detailed in your letter |
 |
State that
you have a disability |
 |
Explain your affiliation with Disability Support
Services |
 |
Have suggestions about what they can do to ensure your success |
 |
If appropriate, make them aware of your past successes |
 |
Discuss specific
details about how examinations will be handled |
 |
Make it clear that you
are a serious, motivated student who will succeed in their class if a
reasonable allowance is made for a specific problem you have in a
specific area |
 |
Make it clear that you are not trying to get through their
class with the least effort possible |
 |
If necessary, engage them in a
problem-solving process with you when there are not obvious solutions to
the problem |
