The Department of Early Childhood and Special Education in the College of Education is proud to offer opportunities to pursue the degree of Master of Science in Education with emphasis in Reading/Literacy Education. The program offers graduate candidates the chance to extend their areas of licensure while pursuing graduate degrees. All graduate faculty members are dedicated to excellence in their profession and have received awards and recognition in leadership, scholarship, and service to the areas in which they teach.
The purpose of this program is to prepare graduate candidates to imiplement and administer reading and literacy programs for children in the public schools and other institutions. Graduate candidates will learn to make reflective decisions related to reading and literacy education. The program is designed to meet the performance standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the International Reading Association (IRA), and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

MSE in Reading

The program is a 30-graduate-credit-hour program organized around 21 hours of core coursework, 6 hours of practicum coursework, and 3 hours of an elective course.
Guidelines for MSE in Reading:
In addition to the general application and GPA requirements of the UCA Graduate School, applicants must:
- Submit valid general education teaching license;
- Submit two letters of reference from practicing professionals who can speak to the candidate's knowledge, performance, dispositions, and capability to complete a Master's program;
- Submit appropriate scores on the Graduate Record Examination;
- Complete an interdisciplinary program admissions committee interview with an acceptable rating. Interviews will be conducted once per semester.

Curriculum Rotation for the MSE Reading Program
Clinical ExperienceClinical experience and practicum courses are provided at the UCA Reading Success Center. Area elementary students (grades K-6) attend the center throughout the year to receive assistance and improve literacy and reading abilities.
