Teacher Education Information
WELCOME
The College of Education at UCA offers 13 programs leading to an initial teaching license at the undergraduate level. There is also a graduate level alternative licensure program (Master’s of Arts in Teaching—MAT) for those seeking an initial teaching license who already possess a bachelor’s degree in an area other than education. For more information on this alternative route to teacher licensure, please refer to the MAT website. More information on each of the undergraduate education programs, including course requirements and contact information for program coordinators can be obtained via the following links: Early Childhood Education P-4, Middle Level Education 4-8, Secondary Education.
Consistent with the COE’s Conceptual Framework, there is an emphasis on reflection throughout all teacher education programs. Additionally, undergraduate candidates engage in field experiences with local schools even at the preadmission stage. Before taking more advanced course work in education, candidates must gain Level I admission. Level I candidates acquire advanced theory and skills, which they apply during extensive field experiences—the most prolonged of which is Internship I. After successful completion of Level I requirements, candidates may apply for Level II admission. Level II candidates enroll in the capstone course, Internship II, which is the culminating experience for each program.
In addition to participation in the formally structured teacher education learning opportunities, there are multiple opportunities for candidates to participate as members of professional educational communities. Teachers United, Student Council for Exceptional Children, Collegiate Middle Level Association, and Kappa Delta Pi are student organizations sponsored by the College of Education. Candidates are encouraged to strengthen the outreach of these groups with their own contributions.
Candidates transferring to the College of Education from another institution should contact the Office of Candidate Services immediately upon their acceptance to UCA.
