BSE/BA with Teacher Licensure and ESL Endorsement

According to the Arkansas Department of Education, candidates for licensure may add the English as a Second Language (ESL) Licensure Endorsement to their certificate by completing an approved performance-based program of study and passing the required assessment(s). The additional area of licensure will be added to the credential when all licensure requirements are successfully completed and application is submitted with the signature of the university’s Licensure Officer verifying completion of the program of study. Test score and official transcript must be attached.

This area cannot be added by testing only. To receive an endorsement in Area 308 (7-12), candidates must complete the following courses:

  • Methods of Teaching Second Languages (WLAN 4315),
  • Second Language Acquisition (WLAN 4325),
  • Second Language Assessment (WLAN 4330),
  • Teaching People of Other Cultures (EDUC 3309 –  Cultural Perspectives: Family, School, and Community Partnerships)

After completing the relevant coursework, candidates must complete the required Praxis II assessment: Principles of Learning and Teaching, #0524 (7-12) with a passing score of 164.

Note that since EDUC 3309 is already required for teacher certification, only nine (9) additional hours of coursework are required to obtain this endorsement.
