The University of Central Arkansas offers a Master’s of Science (MS) in school counseling. The purpose of this program is to prepare school counselors to meet the educational, social, psychological, and career needs of students while working collaboratively with students, teachers, parents, peer professionals, administrators, and the community.

The school counseling program is characterized by a commitment to leadership as both a field of academic study and as a practice that is a unique blend of knowledge, skill, and disposition. Program requirements provide students with challenging experiences that integrate theoretical concepts and ethical principles with practical applications. The underlying educational philosophy of the program is  “educating educator efficacy through reflective decision-making.”  (Graduate Bulletin)

The school counseling program is a P-12 licensure program. Our program has an open enrollment, so applications are accepted throughout the year. Required courses are also offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters for the convenience of the professional educator’s schedule. Courses are continually refined and improved to meet the needs of our graduate students. Class meetings range from face to face interactions in the classroom, to distance learning using Blackboard, Centra, and Chalk and Wire. The distance learning components allow students to meet for class and discussion from the comfort of their own home and submit work online.  These features vary with each course offering.

School Counseling candidates are required to hold a valid teacher's license. School counseling certification is contingent upon successful completion of the program and meeting the minimum scores on state mandated examinations.
