Youth Theatre registering for summer program

The Youth Theatre of Central Arkansas is accepting registration for its upcoming summer program. The Youth Theatre offers unique, creative, theatrical experiences for students in grades 3 through 12 and is sponsored by UCA Theatre. Dates for the program are June 2 through June 30.

Symposium to address importance of math and science education

The University of Central Arkansas, along with the Arkansas Science & Technology Authority and Arkansas Business Journal, will co-host a half day event early next month that is to address the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics ( STEM ) education.

Baum Gallery exhibit to feature historic homes of Conway

The UCA Baum Gallery of Fine Arts will feature an exhibit of winning entries from the art competition ?Art in Architecture: Historic Homes of Conway,? beginning with an opening reception from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 7.

The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

During the reception, special recognition will be given to those art educators who participated in this city-wide art competition of Conway school-aged children. Arkansas traditional fiddler music provided by Ricky Russell and Jonathan Traywick.

Nolte-Behrens Lecture set for April 25

The English Department at UCA presents Professor Noel Polk, Nolte-Behrens Lecturer for 2006.

Dr. Polk is a renowned scholar of American fiction and Mississippi writers and has authored a number of books and essays including "Outside the Southern Myth" and "Children of the Dark House: Text and Context in Faulkner."

He will deliver his lecture "Living Outside History," a reflection on his own experiences growing up in a small Southern town, on Tuesday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Burdick Business Administration building, Room 205.

Academic Advising Center to celebrate 10th anniversary

The University of Central Arkansas Academic Advising Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2 with a reception in Harrin Hall Room 117. The celebration reception will feature a PowerPoint presentation highlighting the academic advising center?s work over the last decade.

Scroll yearbooks available May 2-4

The 2006 Scroll yearbooks will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 2-4 across from the bookstore in the Student Center.

Yearbooks are free to full-time students with a student ID as long as supplies last.

Academic Honors Convocation set for Sunday

The 35th annual Academic Honors Convocation will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 23rd, in Reynolds Performance Hall.

President Hardin and Associate Provost Buchanan will recognize superior scholastic achievement and announce this year's Outstanding University Student award winners.

A reception in the Brewer-Hegeman Center will follow the convocation. The public is invited.

Noted director and actor to appear at UCA

Noted television director, actor, teacher, and author, Mary Lou Belli and professional actor, Charles Dougherty will present an ?acting for television? demonstration and screening showcase on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. on Centre Stage of the Snow Fine Arts Center on the campus of UCA.

Staff Picnic set for May 9

The annual Staff Picnic will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 9 at the Student Center Courtyard (rain location: McCastlain Hall).

The picnic is sponsored by the President?s Office and hosted by the staff senate.

Russian National Ballet brings Swan Lake to UCA

Under the artistic direction of former legendary Bolshoi dancer Sergei Radchenko, the Russian National Ballet returns to the United States for the first time in five years, performing Swan Lake at Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall on Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 pm.

Physical therapy student earns prestigious scholarship

Leah Lowe, a third year doctor of physical therapy student at UCA, was recently awarded the prestigious 2006 Mary McMillan Scholarship from the American Physical Therapy Association.

She is the first UCA entry-level physical therapy student to receive such an award from the national association.

Honors High Table to examine genetic screening

Composer Karel Husa to be honored at UCA

Acclaimed composer Karel Husa will be awarded an honorary doctorate at a concert featuring several of his works performed by UCA?s Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 19 in the Reynolds Performance Hall. A reception for Husa will be held in the Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center following the program. Both the concert and the reception are free and open to the public.

Inaugural Burgess Lecture set for Tuesday

Members of the UCA community are invited to attend the Inaugural Burgess Lecture at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 18 in the auditorium of Doyne Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Mary Lidstrom from the University of Washington will give a lecture titled "Research and Education at the Biology/Technology Boundary: the Microscale Life Sciences Center at the University of Washington."

Poet and author Kim Stafford to appear at UCA

Acclaimed writer Kim Stafford will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, in Stanley Russ Hall Room 103. A discussion and book signing will follow the reading. The event is free and open to the public.

World-renowned clarinetist to perform at UCA

UCA Theatre and the UCA Department of Music will present ?The Threepenny Opera? by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill on April 13, 14, and 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Reynolds Performance Hall on the UCA campus.

UCA student selected for Stanford program

UCA Junior Zak Jones has been selected to attend Stanford University?s School of Humanities and Sciences Summer Research-Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) from June 26 through Aug. 18. SR-EIP is a philosophy research program focused on the humanities and the graduate school experience.

Jones will receive a $2,000 stipend, round-trip expenses to Stanford University, room and board on the Stanford campus, and an opportunity to present his research at the Leadership Alliance Annual National Symposium in Virginia.
