Current Research:

  • Treatment of Dysphagia Using the Mendelsohn Maneuver.  This is an R03 project funded by NIH/NIDCD to investigate the physiologic changes in swallowing function post-stroke using the Mendelsohn maneuver in conjunction with surface EMG.
     

  • Real-Time Internet Evaluation of Swallowing.  This is an R01 project funded by NIH/NIDCD to investigate the utility of long-distance, real-time internet evaluation of swallowing function.  This is a joint investigation with The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and The VA Medical Center, GRECC, in Madison, WI.
     

  • Treatment of Language and Memory in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease.  This is a pilot research study funded by the Memory Research Center at UAMS to investigate spaced retrieval training for memory in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.  Dr. Kim McCullough is PI on this project.
     

  • Temporal measures of swallowing function in normal adults and patients post-stroke.  These data are being analyzed in conjunction with Dr. Youngsun Kim at The University of Ohio. 

 

Future Research:

  • Measures of change in hyolaryngeal function and upper esophageal sphincter opening in normal adults and patients post-stroke.
     

  • Functional, long-term outcomes of patients post-stroke or head-and-neck cancer when evaluated using telemedicine.
     

  • Examination of P50 responses and the use of modafinil in patients with right hemisphere stroke and dysphagia.
