Current Research:

  • Psychosocial issues of children and adults who stutter. More specifically, the self view and self-esteem of children who stutter (ages 4-7) is currently being investigated as a part of an NIH-NIDCD grant supported by the Stuttering Research Program at the University of Illinois. 
     

  • Clinical training in the area of early childhood stuttering.  This line of research is part of a USDE grant proposal focusing on personnel preparation and training. 
     

  • The effect of divided attention on speech production.  Recently completed a funded pilot study examining how speech fluency is affected under conditions of divided attention.  Participants were normal speakers across the adult lifespan, as well as persons with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease.  Recently submitted an R03 proposal to the NIH (NIDCD) [Dr. Richard Zriack, co-investigator] to pursue this line of research on a larger scale.
     

  • The relation between stuttering and disordered phonology in young children who stutter.

 

Future Research:

  • Persistency in and recovery from stuttering and the risk factors involved
     

  • The role of parent-child interaction in therapy for children who stutter
     

  • Disfluency characteristics of individuals with Down syndrome and the clinical implications involved.
