SWACURH AWARDS

 SWACURH Awards are awards that UCA can bid for at either a Regional or No Frills Conference.  If a bid wins on a regional level, then it has potential to go onto National level for recognition.

Awards Presented at SWACURH Conference

The following bids will be presented with a written bid at the conference. All of the time period for these bids will be previous SWACURH to present SWACURH. The page requirements on all bids include letters of support, appendices, and text in the count. A page is defined as one side with print, 10-12 point type. Dividers are included in page count. All bids must contain page numbers. Cover of bid must have bidding school’s name clearly visible. All awards will be presented at the closing banquet of the SWACURH Regional Conference.

1.      Commitment to Diversity

The Commitment to Diversity Award is given to a school , which involves a student directed yearlong commitment to awareness and education of diversity issues with the involvement of students.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.       Campus approach to diversity
b.       Goals for campus’ approach to diversity
c.       Diversity Programming
d.
       Accomplishments of diversity philosophy and impact on students
e.
       The bid may not exceed 30 pages in length.
f.
        Look in NCC Handbook for further clarification

  1. Hall of the Year

This award is to recognize the accomplishments of a specific hall at any member school for outstanding programming and community atmosphere. Only one nominee per school is allowed.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.    Nominees must show involvement with their residence hall, on campus, and within other organizations.
b.
       Bid shall include at least one letter of recommendation.
c.       Should include a list of programs and their descriptions.
d.       Include hall’s goals and how they were met during the year.
e.
       Bid should highlight the level of student involvement within the hall.
f.
        Should show the hall’s involvement on campus and within the community.
g.
       Show participation in the NRHH Of the Month program.
h.       Include any recognition the hall has received.
i.
         Include number of students living in the hall as well as information on type of structure and explanation of hall government structure.
j.
         Summary of expenses of hall programs or sponsored events.
k.
       May be no longer than 15 (fifteen) pages in length.

  1. Mita Musick Advisor of the Year

The Advisor of the Year shall be selected by all NCCs with one vote per school. The selection shall take place at the SWACURH conference. A written bid shall be presented to the NCCs.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.
       Nominees must show outstanding service and support to an RHA, Hall Government or other Residence Hall Governing Body (i.e. NRHH Chapter) as a professional staff advisor.
b.
       The bid shall encompass only activities from the previous SWACURH to the present SWACURH.
c.
       The bid shall contain a letter of support from the advisor’s immediate supervisor, and the nominee’s goals as a professional staff advisor and the extent to which they were met.
d.
       The bid shall be no longer than eight (8) pages.
e.
       The bid should contain a detailed outline of the nominee’s activities related to advising and any SWACURH/NACURH involvement (conference attendance, OTM’s written/received, etc.)

  1. Regional Program of the Year

This will provide opportunity for recognition of outstanding residence hall programming.  This will follow the same criteria as the National Program of the Year. The regional submission of bids for the nation award will not be limited to the winner of this award.  Selection will be made at the regional conference.

  1. Resident Assistant of the Year

This award recognizes an outstanding resident assistant of any SWACURH member school. Only one nominee per school is allowed.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.
    Nominee must be currently employed as an RA at the time of nomination.
b.
       Must show involvement with their residence hall, on campus, and within other organizations.
c.
       Include a letter of support from nominee’s immediate supervisor.
d.
       Show how nominee has encouraged community development.
e.
       Include official job description that is published by nominee’s housing office, which shall be printed as an appendix and shall not count towards the page limit, provided it is printed in the same or similar manner as is regularly printed by the housing office.
f.
        Include list of floor / hall activities the nominee was involved in.
g.
       Show outstanding service to their community.
h.
       Bid may be not longer than 8 (eight) pages.

  1. Student Award for Leadership Training (SALT)

The SALT Award recognizes student leadership training programs.

  1. Volunteer of the Year

This award was created to recognize the outstanding contributions of volunteerism throughout the region. Only one nominee per school.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.       Nominee must be a student living in an on-campus unit.
b.
       Must show outstanding involvement with their residence hall, on campus, or within the community.
c.
       Bid shall include letter of support from an advisor.
d.
       Should contain a detailed outline of the nominee’s activities.
e.
       Nominee should show outstanding service to the community through volunteer work.
f.
        Bid may not be longer than eight (8) pages.

Awards Presented at No-Frills Conference

1.      Criteria

The following awards will be presented with a written bid at the No-Frills conference.  These bids shall meet all National Criteria for the award printed in the NACURH, Inc.  National Policy Book, available from the NIC and regional director. The winner of each  category shall be eligible to represent SWACURH for the National award, if applicable.

       NRHH Member of the Year
d.       School of the Year

       Building RHA of the Year
g.
       OCM Distinguished Service Award
h.
       Dan Hallenbeck Achievement Award (may only be given once to any person in a 5 year period, and is not required to be awarded each year, however the advisors may recommend a candidate who did not win the award this year be forwarded as the regional nominee)
i.
         First Year Experience
j.
         OCM NCC of the Year
k.
       Student of the Year

2.      Judging

·      Bids for NRHH Chapter of the Year, NRHH Building Block Chapter of the Year and NRHH Member of the Year shall be judged by the representatives of the regional NRHH Chapters present.

·      Bids for School of the Year shall be judged by a committee comprised of the Executive Committee, and 8 NCC’s appointed by the director, 3 of whom shall be from Texas, 2 from Oklahoma, 1 each from Arkansas and Louisiana, and 1at large. If each state shall not be able to meet its requirement because of bidding schools, the director may appoint additional at large members.

·      The OCM Distinguished Service Award shall be judged by the Executive Committee and the representative from OCM.

·      The Dan Hallenbeck Life Time Achievement award shall be judged by a committee of advisors appointed by the SWACURH Regional Advisor and the committee shall be chaired by the regional advisor.

·      All other awards shall be judged by the NCCs, each school receiving one vote, with the Executive Committee receiving one vote to break a tie if required.

 Regional Board of Director Awards

The following are presented by members of the Regional Board of Directors at the SWACURH

Regional Banquet held at the National Conference.

  1. Davidson Award

The Associate Director of Finance may give two awards each, not exceeding $50 total.  This award was created at SWACURH 2000 and was named after DeWayne Davidson, who served two and half terms as SWACURH AD-Finance, and three terms as NACURH NAF.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.   The award shall be presented to the person and / or school who shows outstanding service to the Associate’s position and to the region.

  1. Millo Award

The Associate Director of Administration may give two awards each, not exceeding $50 total. This award was created at No-Frills 1994 and was named after Michael Milo, former SWACURH Director.

The criteria shall be as follows:

a.    The award shall be presented to the person and / or school who shows outstanding service to the Associate’s position and to the region.

  1. Murphy Award

This award was created at SWACURH 1998 and was named for Dana Murphy, former SWACURH RCC for Texas, Louisiana and Mexico. Each RCC shall give one award not to exceed $40 total for both awards.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.    The award shall be presented to the person and / or school who shows outstanding service to the RCC position and to the region.

  1. National Residence Hall Honorary Cornerstone Award

Up to four awards may be given by the NRHH Associate Director for those people and/or schools who show outstanding service to NRHH in the region and assist the NRHH Associate Director.

  1. Silver Pin

The Silver Pin is a nationally endorsed award given at the discretion of the Regional Director.  The criteria shall be as follows:

a.    The award shall be awarded to individuals who have provided leadership and direction to the regional affiliates of NACURH, Inc.
