  Summer SEM Workshops for Teachers
Dates

The University of Central Arkansas will offer a week-long workshop involving Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) on two occasions during Summer, 2006.

July 24 - 28, 2006
July 31 - August 4, 2006
Details

Up to six (6) teachers of Grades 6-12 will be selected to participate in each workshop. Workshop hours will be from 9 am until 4:30 pm daily. First, participants will learn some background about the instrument and its operation. Then, each teacher will be guided through an independent investigation of the structure and possibly surface chemistry of an organism or material of interest to them, and perhaps related to a classroom activity or course they teach. The last day of the workshop will be devoted to organizing and sharing results, and to developing plans for how the Scanning Electron Microscope, or images and data from the SEM, could be involved in a classroom activity at their home school. All participants will receive a certificate of training and copies of all images obtained.

Workshop participants will be encouraged to consider enrolling in an optional 1-sh Independent Study course at the graduate level in Fall 2006, for which they would implement the proposed SEM-based activity, assess its value, identify possible changes and improvements, and report their findings. It is expected that participating teachers will develop a group of effective classroom activities involving SEM, over a series of these workshops, and that these activities will then be placed on UCA’s SEM website for the benefit of all other teachers.

Financial

Thanks to support by The Toyota USA Foundation, there is no charge to participants for the workshops. Teachers completing the workshop will receive a $250 stipend. Teachers electing to reside in UCA campus dorms during the workshop will have their dorm fee covered, and teachers traveling more than 30 miles to the UCA campus from their residence will have one roundtrip covered at the standard mileage rate. Teachers will be responsible for the cost of their meals, and several dining options will be available. Teachers enrolling in the 1-sh Independent Study course during Fall 2006 will receive an additional $100 stipend (~50% of tuition cost).
