Clinical Education
Professional DPT Program
Preparing for the Clinic
Clinical education is the portion of the student's professional education involving practice and application of classroom knowledge and skills to on-the-job responsibilities. Clinical education is an integral part of the academic curriculum. Clinical internships take place at affiliating clinical education sites with the help of clinical educators who volunteer their time.
The UCA DPT curriculum for Clinical Education includes a variety of clinical education experiences in settings such as acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, and out-patient as well as specialty areas both in Arkansas and out-of-state. Experienced physical therapists provide students with quality clinical instruction. Students apply their knowledge and practice their skills learned in the curriculum with a broad range of patients through out the age-span under supervision of their clinical instructor. During the 36 month DPT program, students complete five clinical practica totaling 43 weeks. Many clinical instructors are able to share their expertise and years of experience. In addition, some PTs have completed the APTA Clinical Instructor Credentialing Program.
The Director of Clinical Education is Dr. Misty Booth and she can be reached at mbooth@uca.edu or 501-450-5543. Resources for clinical instructors, center coordinators of clinical education, and professional DPT students can be found below.
Spring 2012 APTA Clinical Instructor Education and Credentialing Program
The Department of Physical Therapy at UCA will host the APTA Clinical Instructor Education and Credentialing program on Friday and Saturday, April 27-28 in the PT Center. The course provides 15 contact hours of CEU and Dr. Booth will be the course instructor. Also, successful completion of the assessment center results in the awarding of APTA CI credentialing. The Course and Assessment Center will be useful for both new and experienced physical therapist and physical therapist assistant educators involved with clinical education. Although the information presented covers the basic skills for CIs, the interactive tasks and large- and small-group discussions will be of benefit even to experienced educators. The cost of the program will be $150 for APTA members and $240 for non-APTA members and will include refreshments and lunch each day as well as the CI Education Manual, Assessment Center, CI Credential Certificate and registry on an APTA database. See Course Brochure and Registration Form. Or, for more information or to reserve a space in the course and request a registration packet, please contact Stacey Stephens at staceys@uca.edu or 501-450-5549. Deadline to register is March 28.
