Undergraduate Degree Programs

All students declaring a Speech-Language Pathology major are accepted as tentative candidates to the undergraduate program. Application deadline is July 1st. Admission to the program is competitive and selective, and enrollment is limited. To be eligible to apply, a student must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Junior status with a minimum grade point average of 2.7
  2. A G.P.A. of 3.0 in the three pre-application courses (at least a "B" in each class)
    - SPTH 2300; Introduction to Clinical Speech
    - SPTH 2306; Anatomy & Physiology I
    - SPTH 2322; Applied Phonetics
  3. Three references from outside the department
  4. A handwritten autobiography

Prior to being admitted to the program in Speech-Language Pathology, students may only enroll in the following courses:

  • SPTH 2300 Introduction to Clinical Speech
  • SPTH 2322 Applied Phonetics
  • SPTH 2303 Beginning Sign Language
  • SPTH 2306 Anatomy & Physiology I
  • SPTH 4310 Assistive Technology

Once admitted, a student's progress in the Speech-Language Pathology program is reviewed routinely. To remain in good standing, the student must:

  1. Maintain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.7
  2. Maintain a major grade point average of 3.0
  3. Observe the fundamental rules of ethical conduce as described in the Code of Ethics of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association

Post-Baccalaureate Program

Students who have Bachelor's Degrees in other fields may pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology. These students must complete undergraduate coursework in Speech-Language Pathology and then apply for admission into the Master's Program. To apply to the Master's Program, a student must have earned an overall minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 (A=4) or at least a 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours and take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). Admission to the Master's Program ir competitive and selective.

Post Baccalaureate Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 in all undergraduate coursework and must make at lest a "B" in two courses, SPTH 2322 Phonetics and 2306 Anatomy and Physiology I during the summer term before taking the remaining required undergraduate courses.

Post-Bac students must follow the sequence listed below and take a total of 39 semester credit hours of required undergraduate courses in Speech-Language Pathology.

To meet certification requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) offered by the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) students must complete one course from each of the following areas with a grade of C or better: Biology, Physical Science, Math, & Behavioral or Social Science.

A student must complete a minimum of 18 hours of undergraduate coursework in Speech Pathology and take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) before making application to the Master's Program in Speech-Language Pathology at UCA. The application deadline is February 1st. Admission to the Master's Program is competitive and selective.
