Speech Communication and Public Relations

UCA students who select an emphasis in Speech Communication become specialists in the theories and practices of effective communication. They understand the dynamics of persuasion, discussion, and organizational communication, and are prepared in their personal and professional lives to be successful in a range of speaking situations from public speaking to small group discussion to interpersonal and nonverbal communication.

The emphasis in speech communication also prepares students for careers in such fields as sales, education, tourism, religion and entertainment. It is also an excellent undergraduate degree for those planning to apply to professional schools to become business executives, lawyers or governmental officials.

Students who select a major in Public Relations will be involved in the strategic administration and management of communication and interaction between organizations and publics they serve. Public Relations professionals control how organizations and their products or services are perceived by the public. Additionally, they manage the image their clients represent. As a Public Relations major, you will experience the written, oral, and visual components that make up effective public relations.

Public Relations is an interdisciplinary study. Public Relations includes elements from many other academic and professional disciplines.
