Oxford American

Oxford American magazine has arrived at UCA.

"Having a magazine of the Oxford American's caliber on our campus will benefit not only our students and faculty, but the entire state as well." Hardin sees many pluses. "Not only will our English and writing students learn from this, but our business students as well (by seeing how a publication is run)."

President Hardin also said, "The UCA Honors College of 600 students with an average ACT score of 31, coupled with the literary excellence of the Oxford American, further affirms UCA as a university committed to academic excellence."

THE OXFORD AMERICAN, aka "The Southern Magazine of Good Writing," was founded in 1992 with an editorial mission to "explore the American South." It has published original writing by many of this country's best writers including: Donna Tartt, Charles Portis, Barry Hannah, Roy Blount, Jr., Tony Earley, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Wendy Brenner, Steve Martin, and Susan Sontag, not to mention William Faulkner, Walker Percy, James Agee, and Zora Neale Hurston. Its Southern Music Issue, which comes with a CD, has been featured on NPR three years in a row and has won two National Magazine Awards for Best Single Topic Issue, most recently in 2004 (beating out Rolling Stone and National Geographic, among others).

The magazine ceased publishing in Little Rock in 2003 but has just re-emerged as a nonprofit quarterly on the campus of UCA. The magazine's first new issue will come out in November.

Through its association with UCA, the magazine will offer three work-study opportunities per semester to students interested in learning about publishing and gaining hands-on experience in areas ranging from business to editorial operations. Oxford American hopes to attract bright students from all disciplines whose brains, enthusiasm, and ingenuity will help make the magazine a success.
